In the novel Pod by Stephen Wallenfels, the author tells the story of alien invasions through the eyes of our teenage main characters. The story is being told through the first person point of view and the audience gets first hand of Josh and Meg how he and she are feeling in the situation there in. In the first chapter “Static” our character Josh is just becoming aware of the “Screeching noise” that woke him from his sleep. The aliens are now taking a part in the environment and this will be a world problem for the humans.
Josh is not dreaming when he starts to see the acts committed by the aliens and their ship. Like humans do in other futuristic alien novels or movies; they panic. In the society our character lives in, society is at the normal expectations as the present day. Once the change of another species comes, the environment is suddenly altered “There’s a sphere spinning above the apartment building.”(p.14) Living with aliens has never been an option for humans. Josh although not aware of his situation yet is staying calm along with his dad and Jaime. The first chapter really goes into depth of describing the alien intervention and also does a good job of showing how Josh’s environment is being destroyed.

It’s been a fact that technology can push the limits of a society especially through a futuristic point of view; you could create any type of world or way of living though technology. Where as in Tally’s society technology performs the life changing procedure changing the life of a pre-teen. In their society the technology mainly focused on is the “Morpho Software” This software is what Tally and other girls hope to interact with, she prefers to have a symmetrical face becoming pretty; Shay wishes to stay the same. Both girls would like a life on the outside, although they both imagine different things Tally wants the pretty life, and Shay wants the asymmetrical life in the outside world.
Its hard to live life when you know technology is all you got in order to determine your life style. Its hard to cope with that “ Why do I have to be symmetrical? I’d rather have a face with two different sides”(p.42) This should be the view to whom ever would like to be pretty and not themselves; being ugly is what every pretty girl once was. As the reader would like to agree with the character Shay, who feels the beauty is inside and it’s the thing who makes you who you are. The quote above sets the rest of the book up for what was next to happen.

Tally Youngblood and Shay are both at a disadvantage, Tally’s life’s falling apart, she’s friendless, and most of all she’s ugly. Our young character is not having much luck with her time in the community neither was Shay. Youngblood faces some tough inequalities of not fitting in causing her to choose what’s more of a priority to her. Tally has to change a lot in order to stay on her way to the transformation. This all comes to a turn once “Shay”, the best friend of Tally runs away. Shay is at a point in her life where being pretty is not an option. She doesn’t want to live like everyone else. However Tally feels it has to happen regardless, becoming pretty is what she mostly desires.
Would you rather have something given to benefit you mentally and physically in society in exchange for the whereabouts of your best friend. Tally was asked this question by the authorities. Once found out that Shay has left the community and out in the pretty world, police become upset and focus on catching there perpetrator. Time goes on and Shay isn’t found, only one person knows where; but Tally doesn’t want to tell. The authorities are now at their end and are struggling to overcome their mission. By blackmailing Tally they put her into a situation where she could lose her pretty operation. The outcome most definitely impacted our main character but it was for her liking she made that decision.

The society has the girls ages 12-16 living in a confined society where they must all share and sleep together. They are forced by the expectations of society to live there; this is said to be called the UGLIES place of living. All girls must sleep here and stay in the community until there surgery day. This seems to be on the opposite side of what Tally and her friend are acting on. Her open minded quality and her abandoning best friend push their limits while apart of society. Throughout the chapter Tally goes through obstacles not keeping her from giving up on what she believes is right.
As the government can sometimes enforce strict rules, most could imply demanding society to live in a certain environment because of a different view; can be subject to problems. As seen through “Going anywhere else was pure torture…The uglies in her own dorm treated her like a walking disease” (p.120) This quote shows the hard times girls living their face. In the book the reader sees it could get chaotic with all the girls and their anxiety to be pretty builds up. Without a doubt Tally’s society has her environment at a disadvantage until the age 16. So until the Tally has the problems of her friend and also hers.

The Uglies, a futuristic view on America set with a futuristic twist, the society as a whole seems to care a lot about looks. It seems to be ironic because even today there are those who care about looks. However the book depicts the view through girls the age’s o 12-16. Our main character Tally Youngblood who is 15 brings the reader into her dilemma in her society. She and her best friend are destined for beauty the reader knows this because in the novel Tally implied “You’re still yourself on the inside, Shay. But when your pretty, people pay attention more attention”(p.93) It seems that both Tally and her friend are on different views on their aging. The government in her society has the rule for girls to be transformed into prettier girls once of age.
One should always question what they don’t agree with, that’s the idea Scott Westerfeld intended to incorporate through Tally’s best friend. She doesn’t agree that every girl who’s her age should want a plastic surgery done. It’s sort of connecting o present day operation where mostly girls in there 20s want the job done. In our society today the expectations to be pretty are different. People in their society are mostly good looking because all girls aged to 16. Our character Tally also has a courageous characteristic of her own. From the first glimpses in the book, the reader becomes aware of how Tally operates. She seems to have a very adventurous side to her. Thanks to her government she has no choice but to act the way she does because of who her peers are, they all want to be pretty and only one to be ugly.
