POD-ENV
Sean Young (POD-ENV)
In the novel Pod by Stephen Wallenfels, the author tells the story of alien invasions through the eyes of our teenage main characters. The story is being told through the first person point of view and the audience gets first hand of Josh and Meg how he and she are feeling in the situation there in. In the first chapter “Static” our character Josh is just becoming aware of the “Screeching noise” that woke him from his sleep. The aliens are now taking a part in the environment and this will be a world problem for the humans.
Josh is not dreaming when he starts to see the acts committed by the aliens and their ship. Like humans do in other futuristic alien novels or movies; they panic. In the society our character lives in, society is at the normal expectations as the present day. Once the change of another species comes, the environment is suddenly altered “There’s a sphere spinning above the apartment building.”(p.14) Living with aliens has never been an option for humans. Josh although not aware of his situation yet is staying calm along with his dad and Jaime. The first chapter really goes into depth of describing the alien intervention and also does a good job of showing how Josh’s environment is being destroyed.

It’s been a fact that technology can push the limits of a society especially through a futuristic point of view; you could create any type of world or way of living though technology. Where as in Tally’s society technology performs the life changing procedure changing the life of a pre-teen. In their society the technology mainly focused on is the “Morpho Software” This software is what Tally and other girls hope to interact with, she prefers to have a symmetrical face becoming pretty; Shay wishes to stay the same. Both girls would like a life on the outside, although they both imagine different things Tally wants the pretty life, and Shay wants the asymmetrical life in the outside world.
Its hard to live life when you know technology is all you got in order to determine your life style. Its hard to cope with that “ Why do I have to be symmetrical? I’d rather have a face with two different sides”(p.42) This should be the view to whom ever would like to be pretty and not themselves; being ugly is what every pretty girl once was. As the reader would like to agree with the character Shay, who feels the beauty is inside and it’s the thing who makes you who you are. The quote above sets the rest of the book up for what was next to happen.

Tally Youngblood and Shay are both at a disadvantage, Tally’s life’s falling apart, she’s friendless, and most of all she’s ugly. Our young character is not having much luck with her time in the community neither was Shay. Youngblood faces some tough inequalities of not fitting in causing her to choose what’s more of a priority to her. Tally has to change a lot in order to stay on her way to the transformation. This all comes to a turn once “Shay”, the best friend of Tally runs away. Shay is at a point in her life where being pretty is not an option. She doesn’t want to live like everyone else. However Tally feels it has to happen regardless, becoming pretty is what she mostly desires.
Would you rather have something given to benefit you mentally and physically in society in exchange for the whereabouts of your best friend. Tally was asked this question by the authorities. Once found out that Shay has left the community and out in the pretty world, police become upset and focus on catching there perpetrator. Time goes on and Shay isn’t found, only one person knows where; but Tally doesn’t want to tell. The authorities are now at their end and are struggling to overcome their mission. By blackmailing Tally they put her into a situation where she could lose her pretty operation. The outcome most definitely impacted our main character but it was for her liking she made that decision.

The society has the girls ages 12-16 living in a confined society where they must all share and sleep together. They are forced by the expectations of society to live there; this is said to be called the UGLIES place of living. All girls must sleep here and stay in the community until there surgery day. This seems to be on the opposite side of what Tally and her friend are acting on. Her open minded quality and her abandoning best friend push their limits while apart of society. Throughout the chapter Tally goes through obstacles not keeping her from giving up on what she believes is right.
As the government can sometimes enforce strict rules, most could imply demanding society to live in a certain environment because of a different view; can be subject to problems. As seen through “Going anywhere else was pure torture…The uglies in her own dorm treated her like a walking disease” (p.120) This quote shows the hard times girls living their face. In the book the reader sees it could get chaotic with all the girls and their anxiety to be pretty builds up. Without a doubt Tally’s society has her environment at a disadvantage until the age 16. So until the Tally has the problems of her friend and also hers.

The Uglies, a futuristic view on America set with a futuristic twist, the society as a whole seems to care a lot about looks. It seems to be ironic because even today there are those who care about looks. However the book depicts the view through girls the age’s o 12-16. Our main character Tally Youngblood who is 15 brings the reader into her dilemma in her society. She and her best friend are destined for beauty the reader knows this because in the novel Tally implied “You’re still yourself on the inside, Shay. But when your pretty, people pay attention more attention”(p.93) It seems that both Tally and her friend are on different views on their aging. The government in her society has the rule for girls to be transformed into prettier girls once of age.
One should always question what they don’t agree with, that’s the idea Scott Westerfeld intended to incorporate through Tally’s best friend. She doesn’t agree that every girl who’s her age should want a plastic surgery done. It’s sort of connecting o present day operation where mostly girls in there 20s want the job done. In our society today the expectations to be pretty are different. People in their society are mostly good looking because all girls aged to 16. Our character Tally also has a courageous characteristic of her own. From the first glimpses in the book, the reader becomes aware of how Tally operates. She seems to have a very adventurous side to her. Thanks to her government she has no choice but to act the way she does because of who her peers are, they all want to be pretty and only one to be ugly.

Star Spangle Banner V. Allegiance
The Star Spangled Banner is a very controversial term in the classrooms throughout the United States of America. Not everybody knows the Star Banner because they do not believe in our country. The question whether or not citizens should know the banner is a very controversial topic. Should the public be made to know of our countries song of honor? I believe that if they live in the United States then the person should at least have knowledge of what it stands for.
This topic relates to the Pledge of Allegiance, people across America find the song demanding. Not all citizens believe in the same god and to have the name in the song means forcing to pledge under our god. Its unfortunate the country has this problem; but the people have the right to argue the pledge. I believe both songs are respected well, but should be taken into more thought on when it should be recited. At every main event the banner is sang in U.S arenas. Since it’s our country we have the right to sing it, but forcing everyone to stand up isn’t right.
Security
At times the world changes so rapidly that you don't even know what is happening. The truth is that a brutal "futuristic" police idea is growing up all around us, but most humans are unaware of the change. At our present day state security is cracking down on crime. Futuristic police will have an easier job of detecting criminal activity. Humans today are unaware of the importance of security force improvement. If there is more technology advancement with things like cars, crime will erupt.
The future should look to better the civilian life, look to protect, hopefully in the future there’s world peace, but of not smart police cars and training will protect society. What is highly questioned is what the job of futuristic policemen will be like; with so much new to take place police need to step up their duties, new laws should be enforced. I look to see humans abiding by the laws creating a empathetic society. The video above highlights the new improved police car of the future, its new functions assist cops on the road.
Living
When it comes to the idea of the future, communities will probably be intentionally designed so that humans will have a great amount of eco friendly space even in the most densely populated cities. Living today is at a livable standard but look for it to increase during the futuristic shift. Creatively houses will be made and shaped to produce solar powered life styles. It’s also safe to say houses could also be designed to help and aid human life. Sort of like a Smart house, this could benefit humans and provide friendly assistance. I also feel futuristic houses will all contain home security. This will lower the house invasion rate in society.
Living for the future is always depicted out throughout movies today, many wonder how life will be in the homes of the future. Details will be added to the house creating beneficial chances for humans. In our present day technology is used to help out humans. Once more ideas progress technology will produce easier living. What housing in the future will most likely interrupt is architects who design, you can infer that technology will design life later.
POEM
Futuristic
By Kestrel Quiambao
By Kestrel Quiambao
It's okay, it's alright I can survive this endless strife Living all this life with all the fight A beginning, a start of a new life. Sitting in a rock beside a green pepper plant Everyday the sunlight strikes my skin Breathing air and water as what I want Jumping one feet high just to win. It's okay, it's alright I'll sow the seeds of the future Painting the wall with black and white For the beginning of a new culture I don't suppose you know That my life's not complete I keep on searching, from high to low And I don't suppose you can compete -This poem explains the blankness the future can bring, nobody has a clear idea on the way the future will be shaped. There are many different articles. Poems and media produced entertainment depicting the future. It's all useful because it’s based on many different ideas and feeling of our unknown future, the poem above shows the vision though the eyes of a girl with an open mind. Her use of relating the future to black and white gives you a feeling of unfamiliar thoughts about the future. Both colors stand for information. I would say this poem could relate to how most humans feel; living life everyday creating a future for you is significant. The poem views life for the future as a growing idea in minds of those who live, her choice of using word choice like plant and seed supports that. The future should be revealed to everyone when the time comes. What the poem shows is how much time is taken to create positive ideas to a future where everything Is normal |
Fahrenheit 451

The book forces the future to present the present as a time of more empathy then shown throughout the book. This means life today should be never over looked or taken advantage of, really because worst things can happen rather then what happens in the book. If the government took the freedom away our society would become fierce. Worldwide violence would spring out because of the change of living. The book shows how their society became formed into believing one thing.
Transformers
\
The movie Transformers is an alienated movie contrasting the sides of robots the Autobots and Decepticons. Both robots from worlds far beyond Earth fighting a war that landed on Earth. The autobots find themselves aided by the human military, while the decepticons look to destroy life on Earth as a whole. There motive was first to wipe out the autobots, but then became aware that in order for that to happen the humans need to go also.
It wasn’t until the character played by Shia Labeouf, came across a car; a car which he thought was normal started to act strange. Little did he know it was a autobot disguised, this is how our human involvement came about. The U.S NASA program became aware of their new intruders and began looking for Shia. This movie has a scientific twist depicting the way humans react when under attack by such a bigger, stronger and smarter force.
A wider look into the movie could broadcast a time where our present is much easier to live in then a future like Transformers. It is easy to tell what happens during the present , but our future is at a bigger disadvantage because the events are uncertain.
District 9
District 9 is a science fiction film based off previous films already broadcasted with the same principles. This South African thriller depicts a time period where aliens and science intertwine. Both sides are controlled by the government. Only later creates a disaster for civilians and the angry aliens. This problem was created when the large alien aircraft hovered motionless over the land. Once civilians got control they forced all the pawns to live in quarantine a confined area; secured by the multinational military. Humans are using technology to achieve greatness, but use human soldiers to form peace between the people.
The movie reflects life as it is today, some of the same tactics useable today are shown in the movie. It’s clear to say the movie depicts what happens when there are two different life forms living together. Both sides are equally curious about one another, and the human mind is given that ability. In the movie a couple of men wonder into territory in search of alien fluid. Transforming into one of the pawns the man is now living for the alienated species. This creates a problem for the man because his organs are worth bio-tech millions.
The purpose of this film is to show the bad tendencies humans create when money becomes the ultimate goal. Humans like to keep the power on their side, sometimes abusing it but technology also interest what the humans want. Throughout the movie they want to use alien weapons create a desire for alien life.

Jamming in the Future
What will the music be like ?
It comes to a time where music will change up, generations kick out the old and invite the new. Not ever to be left in the past, but to be brought up later to mix in with the present. This happens in our present year 2012, although music has catawampously changed, we still peek into the 1990's or earlier then that to satisfy our music savvy minds. I question the future, what will kids in a society like now be living like? I could create a couple ideas for the years to come, the video above provides a glimpse into a robotic theme. Mostly because robots and technology are mixing now, I feel this could some how affect humans, mainly because we all have different types to listen to. I could predict awkward change in society because of the same music craving.

Transportation on a NEW level .
-In this video, you will see the crazy transformation in cars of our future, with so much questions being asked only as time passes will you get more answers.
This advancement in transportation will open up the doors to more change, because when cars start to fly, they will also start to cut through water. This most likely will create new laws and restrictions for public users. The future of cars taking off is what I wouldn’t and probably wont see in my lifetime but the idea of it seems very much possible. What I would like to see is futuristic cars shape and size change, also speed ,creating a car that goes at the speed of an airplane. Although it seems as dangerous, having a car that fast could be intense and unique.

Future Utensils
- (Positve) Digitally captures handwritten and audio notes. Sensitive microphone. Notes can be shared with popular online sites.
-The Echo combines the flexibility of handwritten note taking with the intertwining of digital document management to make your notes more useful, and Livescribe Connect makes your notes easier to access and share.
The Apple store has recently released a new writing utensil called the Echo; this pen is like a glimpse into futuristic writing techniques. The pen has 8 components that create the smart functions needed to help out those using it. As technology advances aiding human’s life’s become easier, I would say the pen should be bought by college students who receive lectures in classes. Also one of the functions allows the pen to audio record, so taking notes is no longer a hassle. The overall effect of this pen is to make writing easier, the pen picks up all that you write no matter the neatness of your penmanship. The creation of this pen depicts the future as technology starts replacing methods making regular pens and pencils useless, because why write if you could audio record and take notes from invisible writing later to be translated on your computer. As of right now the pen is selling alright but as the sequels come out and new advancements get put on the pen it should be a better seller.
